Frequently asked questions

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic approach that works with the subconscious mind, which is the part of the brain that runs habits, emotional responses, beliefs and automatic patterns.
In a hypnotherapy session, you are guided into a focused, relaxed state where your mind becomes more receptive to change. From here, unhelpful patterns can be gently updated and replaced with healthier ones.

Research shows hypnosis can support stress reduction, emotional regulation, behaviour change and symptom relief when used appropriately and ethically.

Is hypnotherapy evidence-based?

Yes. Hypnosis has been studied for decades and is recognised as an effective, evidence-informed approach for issues such as anxiety, phobias, stress, pain management, habit change and emotional regulation.

Brain imaging studies show that during hypnosis, areas of the brain involved in attention, perception and emotional processing change activity; supporting the idea that hypnosis is a real neurophysiological state, not imagination or mind control.

Will I be unconscious or asleep?

No. Hypnosis is not sleep.
You remain aware, present and in control at all times. Most people describe it as a state of deep relaxation combined with focused awareness; similar to being absorbed in a book, meditation or daydream.

You can hear everything that is said, and you can speak, move or stop the session at any time.

Will I lose control?

No — this is one of the most common myths about hypnosis. You remain aware and in control the entire time, and you cannot be made to do or say anything against your will. Clinical hypnotherapy is a collaborative process: you are an active participant, not a passive subject, and you can speak, move or stop the session at any point.

What happens in a session?

Every session begins with a conversation about what you would like to work on. You are then guided into a comfortable, focused state of relaxation — most people describe it as feeling similar to a guided meditation. From there, we work gently with the patterns you want to change, and you leave feeling calm and clear. Sessions run 60–90 minutes, in North Perth or by telehealth.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on what we are working on. Some people notice meaningful shifts after a single session, while deeper or long-standing patterns usually benefit from structured multi-session work. We will map out a personalised approach in your first appointment, and packages are available for structured programs such as weight loss and The Release Method.

Is hypnotherapy safe?

Yes. Clinical hypnotherapy is a non-invasive, collaborative process. If you are managing a medical or mental health condition, hypnotherapy works best alongside the care of your GP or treatment team — it is a powerful support, not a replacement for medical care.

Can children and teenagers have hypnotherapy?

Yes. Sessions with young people are adapted to their age and development — lighter, more conversational and always prioritising safety, trust and rapport. Parents and carers are warmly included in the process. You can read more on our children and adolescents page.

How is clinical hypnotherapy different from stage hypnosis?

Stage hypnosis is entertainment — willing volunteers, bright lights and showmanship. Clinical hypnotherapy is a structured, evidence-informed therapeutic process focused entirely on your goals. There is no loss of control and no theatrics: just calm, collaborative work with your subconscious in a safe, professional setting.
